Good health is something that needs to be nurtured from a young age. The habits and choices we make early in life shape our future, determining our destiny. When we engage in activities we love, it never feels like work. Instead, it becomes a fulfilling part of our lives, contributing to our success and growth. However, taking the wrong path can lead to a life of misery and illness, affecting not only ourselves but also our families.
Let me share with you a true story that highlights the devastating impact of poor choices. After World War II, a seven-year-old boy’s mother took a cigarette from her husband and gave it to her son. Perhaps she thought she was doing something good, but it was far from it. The boy became addicted to smoking, setting the course for a lifetime of health problems. His life, wife, and daughter were deeply affected as he spent most of his time bedridden and in hospitals. Despite wanting to quit, he suffered severe headaches without cigarettes, trapping him in his addiction.

His health deteriorated rapidly. He developed heart problems and kidney stones, and an angioplasty was unsuccessful because the surgeons encountered a blockage they couldn’t bypass. He underwent a triple bypass surgery and stitching, but he fell into a coma for 15 days. During this time, a machine constantly beeped, requiring frequent adjustments to keep him alive. The nurses hoped that his coma would break his addiction, and indeed, he never smoked again. However, the damage was irreversible. He needed a pacemaker, and ten years later, as its battery depleted, he required a second pacemaker to regulate his heart.
Complications arose. The antibiotics he took conflicted with his medications, causing him to lose muscle mass through his urine. He became so weak that he needed a lift to move between his bed and a chair. Then, he contracted MRSA, a severe infection that threatened his pacemaker. Despite doctors’ efforts, his condition worsened.
By the time he reached 65, his body could no longer cope. On September 19, 2006, he suffered a catastrophic hemorrhage, bleeding from his nose and mouth. He passed away, leaving behind a poignant reminder of the consequences of early poor choices.
This tragic story underscores the importance of making healthy decisions from a young age. The habits we form early on can lead us to a life of fulfillment or a lifetime of suffering. It is crucial to prioritize our health, not only for ourselves but also for our loved ones, ensuring a life of happiness and success.
